Recently, I visited Montreal and Vermont. I never leave home without at least a few art mediums, so I was able to capture sketches of the rooftop view from our lodgings in Montreal, Dieu du Ciel on Laurier Ave, a plein air watercolor of the view from the courtyard in the middle of Old Port Montreal, and Foam Brewery in Vermont. While on my adventures, I created a little art scavenger hunt. I placed my artist business cards in various locations. If you’re a local and you find one of them, send me a message HERE for a surprise. Over the duration of the summer people in PA, MD, and DE will have a chance at the scavenger hunt. I’m taking a little break in March from teaching classes so I can focus on creating some more original large-scale work. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m not busy.
On Sunday, March 25th I’ll be participating in the All Kinds Pop-Up Art Exhibit happening at the Newark Arts Alliance in Newark, Delaware. CLICK HERE to go to the Facebook event.
And a new painting. This was my first experience with both watercolor grounds and gold leaf flakes. For those who are unfamiliar with watercolor grounds, it’s a compound used to treat canvas to make it suitable for watercolor painting. This is great for playing with watercolor without worrying about framing a piece in order to display it.
Today I taught a pastel portrait class for beginners at Tulpehocken Exchange. It was the perfect activity for a rainy Saturday afternoon. It was an intimate group with creative folks including musicians and a sculptor. I taught them some basics using dry pastel and offered tips on facial proportions, color, the blending vs. texture balance, and various methods of achieving different styles. Pastels are a great way to get vivid, painterly affects. They’re a wonderful step into painting. (Or use on their own.) Check out the slideshow below to see photos from the class.

Chinchilla Floral Those who know me in person know that I have 2 ornery chinchillas that I love to pieces. I created this small watercolor painting of a chinchilla floral print. It’s now available on Society6 on phone cases pillows, travel mugs, stickers, and other projects. Personally, I think it’s perfect to show your chinchilla love with a snazzy phone case. I haven’t had much time to create something just for myself. Between creating images for library programs and art classes I’ve been teaching, I haven’t had much time to myself. I finally was able to create this small mixed media piece, The Elizabethan Librarian.
